A hardly group of just seven ventured out for Kathy’s ride to Leckford; the rain and other committments no doubt stopping others coming. So after a quick conflab at the start, it was decided to cut out the stop and just ride out to coffee at Leckford.

Alice and Simon joined the ride at Hunters Inn, and the “Magnificent Seven” (so named by Gordon) – Alice, Kathy, Kevin, Gordon, Sam, Simon and Alan – heading off through Braishfield and on to Furzedown Road into Kings Somborne. Then onto Little Somborne. We soon realised that we would passing the lovely little cafe at Sandydown and it was suggested that we called in there to see if we could be accommodated, still with the fallback of pressing on to Leckford.

We were made very welcome by Margaret, the owner, and we enjoyed a selection of cakes, flapjacks and caramel shortbread washed down with Hildon Spring water, tea, coffee and raw hot chocolate. Gordon and Alan went further and had toasted bacon sandwiches. All felt it was remarkably good value.

Alas, it was back into the rain for the ride home and we headed through Stockbridge and taking the Test Valley route though Houghton, Bossington and Mottisfont. As we got into Michelmersh, Sam picked up a rear wheel puncture. Simon leapt in to help him and before long we soon back on our way and headed along Rudd Lane into Braishfield. Alice and Simon left us shortly after and the rest continued through Crampmoor back to North Baddesley.

Despite the weather, it was an oddly satisfying ride.
